A Dangerous Man: The Anarchist in Argentina

An immersive play titled 'A Dangerous Man' in Buenos Aires explores the life of Italian anarchist Severino Di Giovanni, his fight for justice, the historical context of the 1920s, and debates on violence, inviting the audience to become part of the story.

A Dangerous Man: The Anarchist in Argentina

Born in Italy in 1901, Di Giovanni emigrated to Argentina seeking a better life, or perhaps to escape poverty, but upon facing injustices in this country, he became embroiled in the anarchist struggle. Anarchism, let us say it once and for all, is a political movement that seeks the abolition of the state and the creation of a society without hierarchies. Set in an unconventional space, the atmosphere of the play is tense, and it explores different discussions among anarchist groups about the use of violence, as well as the love between Di Giovanni and América Scarfó, and the bloody end of his anarchist life (execution carried out in the Las Heras prison, where the homonymous park is now located in the city of Buenos Aires). The misunderstanding about anarchism is obviously not accidental (ignorance, misinformation, and bad press have fueled it), but still, his legacy and his struggle remain present in works such as 'A Dangerous Man,' which bring to life a man who gave his life for an ideal of justice without oppression, and which presents history and politics as a mirror to look at the present and hear the true roar of power. To rebel against any system or social order implies being perceived as a threat, and in the case of anarchism, it means becoming a dangerous person. This play immerses us in the life of this Italian anarchist who fought for a more just society in 1920s Argentina. Through the directorial approach in an immersive theatrical piece where the fourth wall is broken (and the actors surround, speak to, and touch the audience to make them feel inside the story), the spectator is invited to experience each scene with a dramatic intensity that combines a realistic staging, where the script (which took Osvaldo Bayer's book on Severino Di Giovanni, the idealist of violence, as a reference) incorporates documentary and police genres to build a testimonial suspense verisimilitude. By Hernán Bayón for Anred. Anarchism, for public opinion and society in general, is always a misunderstanding. For anarchism, the state is an oppressive institution that must be destroyed, and society must be organized in a decentralized manner. Said execution is attested by writer and journalist Roberto Arlt, whose last line of his powerful chronicle gives the title to this review. The story of Severino was not very different from that of so many other anarchists who raised the distinctive red flag of their movement. And the ultimate goal is the creation of a society without classes, without oppression, and without authority. But this time without fear and with the hope of a future clenched between the teeth. Every Friday at 21:00 and Sundays at 19:00, 'A Dangerous Man' is presented at the theater Sigue la Polilla, an immersive theatrical experience that recovers the life of Severino Di Giovanni, his political struggle, the historical context of the country, and the controversy over the use of anarchist violence. The idea of community was very present among the anarchists who created neighborhood clubs and educational societies such as libraries and cultural centers. As a political philosophy of freedom, the way to carry out this organization can be nothing but voluntary. Which does not mean that an order is not sought. Argentina. Phone: 011 6153-5991.
